Our Mission
To Live To Love To Learn
The aim of St Brigid’s School is to provide a learning environment, in which each individual student is happy, secure, motivated, sensitively challenged, appreciated and fulfilled. The school is committed to promoting a child-centred approach to education where a child’s worth is validated but not measured by academic attainments alone.
St. Brigid’s School was established in Mullingar in 1984. It is a small through progressive school, educating students with intellectual disabilities from the Midlands under Department of Education and Skills (DES) rules. The Bishop of Meath, +Michael Smith, is our Patron. There are 80 students aged from 4 to 19. We have ten teachers; 15 SNAs; three part-time teachers (Art, Woodwork and Home Economics); and an IT Tutor. We also have twelve Bus Escorts and an ancillary staff of four.
We follow the Primary School Curriculum. Numeracy, Literacy and Life Skills underpin all learning and teaching – we offer the Junior Cycle: level 3 and level 2, QQI (was FETAC) and part of the LC as the students’ age, needs and abilities dictate.
Complimenting this and in line with DES best practise students have an Individual Educational Plan designed by class teacher, other relevant professionals and parents. The IEP targets the specific needs of each student and are reviewed each term. We also provide a framework, which promotes constructive behaviour and discourages unacceptable behaviour. This promotes the feeling confidence and self-worth in our students. We are proud of our students and each year every student receives an award for a social, emotional or educational achievement at our Affirmation Ceremony.
We are hosting and Open Evening on January 29th 2015: 7pm – 9pm where you (parents and professionals) are invited to meet staff and see St Brigid’s. There is also an Open Day for students and parents on February 5th 2014. Primary school aged students 10-12; and, Secondary School aged students 12.30-2.30.
More than anything else St Brigid’s School is a Community. Every year we walk to St Brigid’s Well, Cullion. The walk takes place on Monday February 2nd on this year our 30th when confirmation classes from local schools will join us.
